Members of IGPP and other affiliated departments met in September, 1993 and proposed the establishment of the Center for Planetary Chemistry and Physics (CPCP). Gerald Schubert was appointed to head the Center and Paul Warren was selected as Vice-Chair. Although the members present at the first organizational meeting decided against a formal charter, they developed a list of activities the Center plans to engage in:

1) Assist in formulating IGPP policies and long-term strategies,

2) Promote planetology seminars through existing IGPP and departmental seminar series,

3) Foster interaction in research

a) encourage joint grant applications

b) seek joint arrangements for student advising,

4) Aid in securing advancements for members and nominating members for awards and prizes,

5) Consider ways to promote the effectiveness of teaching of planetology at UCLA.

Monthly meetings are planned to discuss Center business and to promote communication among the members.
