08 May 2000 Tales of Eltanin: The Asteroid from the Bottom of the Sea"
Dr. Frank T. Kyte Dr. Kyte's research has brought him acclaim and visibility both at UCLA and in the broader research community.
Dr. Kyte recently discovered a small piece of the object that collided with the Earth 65 million years ago and produced the mass extinctions associated with the end of the Cretaceous era. He argued that the meteorite, found in a Pacific core, may be a remnant of the asteroid responsible for the Chicxulub crater in the Yucatan peninsula. This work is of fundamental importance in forwarding our basic understanding of the Earth's geological history and has been widely discussed in both the written and broadcast media. The lecture will start with a brief ceremony at which Dr. Kyte, the first IGPP Distinguished Researcher Lecturer, will receive an award in recognition of his outstanding research achievements.
