Cassini/CAPS Observations of Saturn's Magnetospheric Processes

by Michelle Thomsen
Los Alamos National Laboratory

Abstract

Saturn's magnetosphere is fascinatingly different from the Earth's. The two most important differences are Saturn's rapid rotational rate and the presence of plasma sources (specifically, the rings and icy satellites) deep within the magnetosphere. Cassini observations have shed new light on Saturn's magnetospheric sources, losses, transport mechanisms, and dynamics. In this talk we will examine some of the relevant evidence provided by the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS).
