Crackling noise and disorder: learning from magnets about earthquakes?

by Dr. Karin Dahmen
Dept. of Physics University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Abstract

Models suggest that the earth and magnets crackle alike! We show how recent studies on Barkhausen noise in magnets shed light on modeling the universal aspects of earthquake statistics in inhomogeneous fault zones, and motivate new ways to analyze seismic data. Applications to other crackling systems are also discussed.
