The Magnetic Fields of Large-Scale Structure in the Universe

by Dr. Steve Coley
Dept. of Physics & Astronomy, UCLA

Abstract

I will discuss the observations and the theory of magnetic fields in galaxies and clusters of galaxies. It is not known if these fields originated before, during or after structure formation. Recent results indicate that small scale field is amplified in cosmologically trivial time-scales. However, it is still not understood how the large scale field structure is formed.
